Bollywood bombshells prefer exposing students to sex
Mridul Gandotra
Feb. 12, 2005

Bollywood bombshells are in favor of showing real sex to students. First it was Payal Rohatgi who wanted teachers to talk sex.

And now item girl Koena Mitra thinks it's time students were shown porn.

"I believe sex education will remove whatever wrong notions young people have about sex. Teachers as well as parents should take the initiative and talk to them openly. I feel they should be allowed to watch porn films. If they are prevented from doing so under adult supervision, they will simply go behind everyone's back and watch it secretly. "We should discuss matters related to sexual health and practices as freely as we talk about any other subject. Sex needs to be brought out of the closet. In India we continue to be conservative in our thinking and in our approach to sex education," says the Gladrags Supermodel Contest winner who recently sizzled in Sanjay Dutt's Musafir.

While Koena's concern may be well meant, it has left both parents and teachers fuming. Rather than put things in the right perspective, adult movies are likely to pervert children, they insist.

"Sex education should no doubt be an important part of the school curriculum. But that doesn’t mean we let students watch pornography. Adult films have just one aim - to sexually arouse the viewer. That's not what sex education is about," says principal of CRPF Public School Suraj Prakash.

Amity Public School principal Mohina Dhar agrees: "Porn film won’t tell a 16-year-old girl about the hazards of getting pregnant at a young age. It's more important that sex education be scientific rather than entertaining or fun.”

Koena is clearly barking up the wrong tree, says Ram Babu Sharma, a government school teacher who is also a parent. According to him: "It's true that so far we haven’t done much in the name of sex education. As a result, our children have many misconceptions about sex. But showing them a porn film isn’t going to help. For example, it won’t talk about the physical changes that happen as a child grows into an adult. Smut can only titillate, not educate."
