With help from Russian Arms Chavez takes Venezuelan defense to grass root level
Staff Reporter

With help from Russian Arms Chavez takes Venezuelan defense to grass root level.

Venezuela will receive 100,000 Russian AK-103 and AK-104 assault rifles and 10 attack helicopters by mid-2005, President Hugo Chavez said Feb. 6.

Venezuela's armed forces (FAN) is made of 100,000 army, navy and air force personnel. The new Russian assault rifles will replace the FAN's standard issue infantry weapon -- the FAL 7.62 mm assault rifle.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Feb. 6 he would expand the country's military reserves and create "popular defense units" in poor neighborhoods, called "barrios."

At the end of 2004 the armed forces joint command said the new military reserves created a year ago by Chavez totaled 30,000 reservists. Chavez said, "popular defense units must be created in the barrio, in the factory, in units of different magnitude -- 10 persons, 100 persons, 500 persons" per unit.
