Iraqi security forces made up the story about defending a police station south of Baghdad?

Feb. 7, 2005

Iraqi security forces claims that they killed 14 insurgents when the later attacked a police station south of Baghdad and killed 22 police officers. According to them there was a major fight between the Iraqi security forces and the insurgents. But a US commander in that area said that he has no knowledge about any such engagement by the Iraqi forces.

The news reports on the wire read:

”According to media reports, the Iraqi insurgents have adopted a watch and strike policy. They are waiting for opportunities and striking when the feel they have the upper hand. Insurgents attacked an Iraqi police station in the city of Mahawil, 50 miles south of Baghdad, killing 22 Iraqi national guardsmen and police officers and wounding 18. Fourteen insurgents died in the gun battle.”

According to political pundits, the Iraqi security forces are desperate about showing the world that they can really control the insurgency. The Iraqi security personnel are picked from various militia factions as well as the former Iraqi army. US is trying their best to provide the necessary training so that they can do the bulk of security operations. But the fact is that the Iraqi security forces are nowhere close to what they are expected to be. The insurgents intimidate them and many of the security personnel are even deserting.

According to U.S. Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, Iraqi security forces are getting intimidated by the insurgents and retention problem is becoming severe. There are approximately 136,000 Iraqi soldiers and police officers available for duty. But only 88 Iraqi battalions are available for operational activities and a very few are operating at full strength.

Iraq will have to assume full responsibility in taking control of their country. The inner fighting among the emerging politician and performance of the security forces are disappointing.
