Next wave of outsourcing – ‘The mercenaries effect’ - Pentagon faces crunch to meet recruiting goals, lures immigrants faster track to US citizenship
Kiran Chaube
Dec. 27, 2006

It is the most charged up issue, which could expose the Pentagon to criticism that it is essentially using "mercenaries" to defend the country. The recent Iraq war has disillusioned American youth. The common understanding in the main street is that rich is asking for war and the poor is fighting it because they need jobs. Recruitment in the university campuses is not working well. The students have become aware. They want fair share of patriotism by the rich.

The US armed forces, already struggling to meet recruiting goals, are mulling to raise the number of non-citizens in the ranks by opening recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to US citizenship if they volunteer.

Some international think tanks believe, Pentagon will finally opt for outsourcing it like what the large industry is doing. It is sad because serving in the military is pride. It is much more than just a job.

Analysts have voiced concern that a large contingent of non-citizens under arms could jeopardize national security or reflect badly on Americans'' willingness to serve in uniform.

The idea of signing up foreigners who are seeking US citizenship is gaining ground as a way to address Pentagon's "critical need," while fully absorbing some of the roughly one million immigrants that enter the States legally each year, the report said.
