Sanctions against Iran will just create another Iraq type fiasco - it 'should be settled through dialogue in the UN Security Council'' : India
Preeti Singhani
Dec. 26, 2006

The United Nations Security Council is making the same mistakes. US, UK and France are again creating the same Iraq type fiasco. No one wants Iran to possess a nuclear bomb. Because that will be used as a nuclear device against Israel, US, Europe, Russia and India. But what do you really do to stop it. International politics is more complex than a head-on bullfight. That is exactly what happened when America decided to attack Iraq with little diplomacy in place.

It should be dealt in a shrewd way. The way to stop Iran is to cut off Pakistan, Russia and China from supplying Iran with nukes. If Russia and China will not stop and America is not going to act on Pakistan for helping Iran, nothing will work. The negotiations should start in the UN Security Council between the West and China, Russia.

India said enforcing sanctions on Iran was not the solution to the problem of that country's nuclear program.

According media sources, “such an issue should be settled through dialogue in the UN Security Council and sanctions can only be justified if the nuclear program causes ill effects”, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said.

“Iran is a friendly country and over 40 lakh Indians reside in West Asia,” he added.

The UN Security Council had on Saturday announced sanctions on Iran targeting its controversial atomic program after Tehran refused to halt its nuclear fuel work.
