India will not agree to side with America on Iranian nuke issue
Balaji Reddy
Dec. 25, 2006

A major disagreement over Iranian nuke issue is growing between India and United States. While the civilian nuclear agreement is calling for India to side with America in dismantling Iranian nukes, India is not agreeing to that.

According to media reports, treading cautiously on the ‘non-military’ sanctions imposed on Iran by the United Nations Security Council, India today stated that while it’s still studying the ‘implications’ of the move, Iran did have the ‘right to pursue’ its nuclear program for ‘peaceful civilian use.’

India prides itself as an independent nation – different from typical American satellite countries that stand and sit on the commands of Washington. That is where all the Indo-American pursuit of cooperation is falling apart. While Americans have just started learning that the world geopolitics is much more different that their perception, India is determined to stand as an independent nation – a growing superpower for justice and parity.

The UNSC has decided to prohibit supply of technology and equipment, which could help Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, in view of Tehran’s continued defiance of the UN demand to halt its uranium enrichment program.

The UN resolution that has been in the works for some weeks now was watered down at Russia and China’s insistence and doesn’t prohibit light water reactors in its final shape. Invoked under Article 41 of Chapter 7 in the UN charter, the move makes resolution mandatory but provides for its enforcement only through non-military measures like economic sanctions. While it freezes assets of some individuals and entities connected with Iran’s N-program, a blanket travel ban as originally envisaged, has not been imposed.

“Iran has the right to pursue its nuclear program for peaceful civilian use,’’ an official spokesperson said. However, hinting that Iran must abide by its commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, India reiterated that Iran ‘has undertaken certain obligations that its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes.’
