Shortage of engineers can derail the outsourcing boom - Infosys, TCS and Wipro all are concerned
Balaji Reddy
Oct. 23, 2006

How many super brilliant math experts with engineering degree can India produce? The world has put the toughest jobs to Indians and India is excelling. But India has its own priorities. Its defense and space research as well as basic infrastructure development is hampered.

Infosys, TCS and Wipro all are concerned at a lack of talent. The biggest problem is at some point of time the Government of India will intervene in using country’s best talent in servicing low end work of the western world for money.

India has world’s best talent and it is estimated 80% o world’s best mathematicians are Indians in India and abroad. But there is a limit to what India can do,

The math education in Western world especially in United States is so poor that very few talents are created. For example in USA, math teachers are busy making parents happy by making math more entertaining so that they can have their tenure and raise without complaints from the parents. That is not what math is about. All of us who have excelled in math knows, it is an exercise of brain, not a means of relaxing the same.

As a result India is taking the biggest burden. China is much smarter. It allows the Western companies to come and use skilled and unskilled labor force for manufacturing. However, it math based talents are working for Chinese defense systems and infrastructure.

India will start imposing export tax on use of cheap talent from India. That will happen when Indian politicians understand there is enough of FDIs and foreign exchanges and a dearth of talented Indians.

Infosys, TCS and Wipro all are concerned because of another factor. The level of salaries for these IT professional will catch up to UK and Canada levels if not the same levels as US. However, the American and European companies expect Indian to deliver same or better quality software for one-third the price.
