$4 generic drugs – can WalMart set the tone for the pharmaceutical industry?
Joe Weinman
Oct. 20, 2006

WalMart is planning to expand their success in Florida to other 14 states. They are going to deliver $4 generic drugs (100 drugs to start with).

The company came out with this $4 generic drug business model from their experience of providing the same to their own employees.

The biggest question is - can WalMart change the business model in the pharmaceutical industry. They did it in everything they touched – they are experts in reducing the price and start a competitive price war among the manufacturers.

The pharmaceutical industry is plagued with excessive unnecessary cost. But it is also well entrenched in Washington with lobbyists making a big living on them pursuing politicians to allow these companies maintain their turf.

WalMart also has its own clout. But the question is can WalMart finally bring competitiveness among the drug companies.
