King of Thailand leads Army coup in Thailand ousting the Prime Minister
Srikant Das
Sep. 19, 2006

The Army is in control of Thailand now taking orders directly from the King.

The Thai military launched a coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday night, circling his offices with tanks, seizing control of TV stations and declaring a provisional authority pledging loyalty to the king.

The King is in charge says Thailand Army. Democratically elected Prime Minister cannot return to Thailand and his Governmnet is under house arrest.

The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sept. 19 advised U.S. citizens in the city to stay indoors amid reports of armored vehicles surrounding the Thai government headquarters. No curfew has been declared and there are no soldiers visibly patrolling the streets outside the government area.

Speaking via a Web cam connection from New York, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sept. 19 ordered his Cabinet ministers not to make unnecessary overseas travel.

Thailand's government headquarters in Bangkok was blocked by more than 10 tanks Sept. 19, Reuters reported, citing local witnesses. Army television broadcast images of the royal family and songs associated with past military coups. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra planned to return from New York on Sept. 21, a day earlier than scheduled. Thaksin has called a state of emergency.

Thailand operates as a constitutional monarchy, with the king as head of state and the prime minister leading the government. The country is an ally of the U.S. and contributed troops to the U.S.-led military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thaksin has been under considerable pressure to step down.

Elections in Thailand are scheduled for November after the country's constitutional court ruled April's vote was unconstitutional.
