According to media reports, he formed a parallel government Sept. 16 at what he called a "National Democratic Convention" in the Zocalo in Mexico City after the country's Independence Day celebrations concluded. Lopez Obrador asserts that the election in which he was defeated by President-elect Felipe Calderon was marred by fraud that that he should have been the winner. Lopez Obrador had previously stated that he hoped 1 million supporters would attend his convention; local law enforcement estimated the crowd at 200,000.
