According to media sources, Mullah Dadullah, the most wanted Taliban official after Mullah Mohammed Omar, claimed that he personally had under his command some 12,000 fighters battling coalition forces in four southwestern Afghan provinces and 500 suicide bombers, The News reported Sept. 17. According to a report in the Pakistani English-language daily, the Taliban commander warned of larger attacks next spring and that they would focus on targeting Kabul.
The British head of NATO forces in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. David Richards, said at a Sept. 17 press conference that NATO and Afghan government troops had successfully had dislodged Taliban fighters from a district some 15 miles west of Kandahar.
