China finally realizes that it needs India in UN Security council to counter Western power bases

Sep. 7, 2006

China finally realizes that it needs India in UN Security council to counter Western power bases.

Britain, France and America provide a natural tilt for the UN Security Council towards the Western Inetersts - 3 out of 5 are decidedly Western power bases.

Unless there is a conflict between the three Western powers, UN Security Council will always represent the Western power bases. Russia and China can excercise veto powers but that is sometimes politically impossible. China and Russia are major trade partners to the Americans, French and the British. Excercising Veto power sometimes can sometimes be politically impossible.

However, if the UN Security Council has India, the tilt may become somewhat neutral. India does not cow-tow to Western interests. Like Russia and China, India has an independent international policy that is respected heavily in Asia, Africa and even in Europe and (in recent days) in America.

China now understand that India is its best friend against Western powers especially in UN Secuirty Council.

BUt Chinese politicians are still skeptical on India.

According to media reports, China on Thursday said it was willing to "intensify" consultations with India on revamping the UN Security Council to make it more efficient and democratic but was non-committal on actively supporting New Delhi's bid for a permanent seat in the body.

The Chinese stand on India's UNSC bid came out when visiting Indian journalists quizzed Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Quan about Beijing's views on the issue during an interaction in Beijing.
