Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh ready to being Indian cricket right on top as the new coach!
Ajit Parker, Special Correspondent
November 26, 2004

Sources tell me Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh is going to be a coach for the Indian team. John Wright may or may not continue to work as the coach. According Waugh India can very easily come to the top. The team has all the ingredients and it only needs a little spice and appropriate cooking.

India's dismal show in recent times has forced the Indian cricket board to seriously think about whether continuing John Wright as India's coach. Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh opened up an option when he told the media on Tuesday that he might consider the job if made an offer with the "right conditions". Significantly, Waugh is the second Australian to be granted life membership to the Cricket Club of India in 2001, the first being Sir Don Bradman. The honour means Waugh can continue his association with India after his playing days. Waugh was known to be a hard man on the field but off it he is a perfect gentleman. Waugh is a "lover of India" and has been doing significant charity work of rehabilitating orphans in Kolkata which he wants to expand. But Waugh has a record of hard time with Indian cricketers. His differences with Sourav Ganguly during his last tour of India in 2001 is well know. Waugh had said then: "As far as Sourav Ganguly is concerned, I would not like to comment on his captaincy. I’m sure the Indians are happy since he has led them to victory and that's what matters. While I have nothing personal against him, I would have to admit that it was not an easy relationship." However the Australian great now feels the Indian captain is doing a good job and there is no need to replace him. Is Steve Waugh as coach what India need to get back their edge on the field?
