Texas Instruments Building Single Chip Mobile Phone In India

American electronic chipmaker Texas Instruments said Wednesday engineers at its India Research & Development (R&D) centre here were developing a single chip solution for mobile phones.

"Large number of employees here are working on systems and software for a single chip cell phone in India," Texas Instruments (TI) India Managing Director Biswadip Mitra said at a conference on IT innovation in India at the ongoing Bangalore IT.COM.

Delivering his talk on "a peek into ubiquitous embedded world - systems, software and silicon", he said engineers at TI India were integrating digital, analog, radio frequency and modem into the single chip solution.

TI, which was the first multinational to set up base in Bangalore back in 1984, has over 1,600 employees building solutions for TI's chips. The chips are deployed in gadgets all over the world.

He said Sangam, the first single chip DSL modem, built here two years ago, had successfully demonstrated that innovative products can be developed by engineers here.

"Software increasingly is becoming a higher percentage of embedded systems. Besides the value of silicon being important, the value of software is increasing from 34 per cent to over 50 per cent in chips. That is an opportunity for both TI India and the Indian IT industry," Mitra said.

He said as chip sizes are getting smaller, there had been an increase in its power capability for more applications.
