Ending weeks of speculation, Government today appointed Youth Affairs and Sports Secretary S Y Quraishi as Election Commissioner for a five-year term.

A 1971-batch IAS officer, 59-year old Quraishi will fill the vacancy in the three-member Commission arising out of elevation of N Gopalaswamy as the new Chief Election Commissioner. Incumbent CEC B B Tandon demitted office today. The other EC is Navin Chawla. Quraishi has held several key positions including that of Special Secretary in the Health Ministry, Director General of National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and DG, Doordarshan. He has also served as DG of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, the country's largest rural youth development agency. Quraishi founded the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and was its director between 1993 and 1997. An expert on gender issues and HIV/AIDS, he is known for his extensive work in the field of population, women and child development, youth, adolescent and health-related issues. He has a number of books and articles to his credit.
