Bangalore based outsourcing center in the middle of a data theft scandal - can India be trusted with business data?

Bangalore based outsourcing center in the middle of a data theft scandal - can India be trusted with business data?

Before the BPO industry in India could shrug off the embarrassment caused by the Gurgaon and Pune data theft cases, a Bangalore based BPO has now found itself in a similar situation.

An employee of HSBC Electronic Data Processing India Pvt Ltd in the city has allegedly helped unidentified miscreants based in the UK to remove 2,33,000 pounds from HSBC's bank accounts there by leaking confidential customer information.

The cybercrime police are on the look-out for Nadeem Kashmiri (24), a Customer Service Executive working in the Bannerghatta Road office, who has now gone underground after he was suspended by the firm which had conducted an internal investigation.

A few weeks ago, the bank had received complaints from around 20 UK customers that money (amounting to over 3,50,000 pounds) had been transferred from their accounts without their knowledge.

An investigation revealed that all the security procedures had been satisfied when the money had been taken out through ATMs, debit cards and telebanking. The bank also found that entries to the customers'' data had been made from India before each of these transactions were carried out.
