The madras tiger brings prestige and glory to Indian sports
Anand has now a commanding lead of two points in the eight games match. The 'Madras Tiger', as Anand is known in Germany, playing with white pieces, demolished Shirov on Saturday in just 30 moves in the sixth game. After initial opening in Rue Lopez, Shirov inverted one of his games, which he has played in 1996 against Ivanchuk. He started with Bf8 first, but after Bg5, the game was almost lost for Shirov . However, he continued hopelessly for a possible draw, but could not enforce the same and finally surrendered to Anand. The fifth game was fought more or less on equal basis. It was only during the time pressure that Anand brought in some pressure on Shirov, but Shirov, known for his fighting skill, defended very well and in the end, both the players agreed for a draw. "Obviously, I am delighted with this result," Anand told UNI after the game. "In the fifth game, Shirov defended very well and in fact, in the end, I had to be little bit careful which I think I managed and in the end I managed to stay within drawing distance but it was a touch and go encounter," he admitted. Both the games in the Gerling Chess960 World Championship Match between Grandmaster Peter Svidler and winner of last years FiNet Chess960 GM Levon Aronian, being played simultaneously with the duel of the world champions match between Anand and Shirov, were also drawn. On the first day, GM Peter Svidler won the first game but Aronian took the next two games to lead the score 2:1. However Svidler bounced back in the 4th game to equalise the score to 2:2. Both the fifth and sixth games played on Sunday ended in a draw and both the players are now with 3 points each. |
