`Girlfriend` inspired from Razdan`s life
June 13, 2004

Believe it or not, the lesbian-theme movie Girlfriend is based on actor-turned-writer-turned-director Karan Razdan’s real life experience.
“There was this scheming babe who became over-friendly with my girlfriend
and tried to drive us apart, until I aborted her devious plans.

Bas stop: Diana Hayden and Shahwar Ali in Ab Bas This sparked off the inspiration to make Girlfriend which is the most unusual love triangle, or ‘wreck-tangle’, ever attempted in Bollywood cinema,” claims Razdan whose previous erotic thriller Hawas faded into oblivion from the third week.

Was it true that the Censors objected to some of the steamy sequences between the two female lovers in Girlfriend? “That’s right, we were asked to tone down certain passionate scenes. Ultimately the movie was okayed because there is a thought-provoking psychoanalytical theme justifying Ishaa Koppikar’s character’s kinky behavior,” says the director.

Although, Ishaa’s character is supposed to be a lesbian, how come she has sensuous lovemaking scenes, with the hero played by Aashish Chowdhry, being highlighted in the promos? Wasn’t that confusing for audiences? “No, Ishaa’s character is a victim of child-abuse and turns into a staunch man-hater.

Since she is possessive about her bosom-pal (Amrita Arora), she merely seduces Aashish trying to prove to Amrita that he is an unfaithful lover. But she is not deriving physical pleasure from it,” explains Razdan who is ‘re-launching’ late actor Raj Kumar’s daughter Vastavikta Pandit in his next movie Eight which also heralds the comeback of Padmini Kolhapure.
